As the population of our cities continues to grow, and apartment living becomes more prevalent, architects and interior designers are faced with the challenge of reinventing the inner-urban residential building. The Istana development in A’Beckett Street in Melbourne’s CBD, designed by C&K Architecture and built by Hickory Group, is one answer to this challenge.
The designers, developers and builders of The Istana set out to do several things well, and certainly much better than the market typically provides. The first of these was to respond to the streetscape, and complement the heritage features of the setting with a bold massing and façade design, composed at the lower levels with articulated formal elements.
The design of the interiors behind the building’s bold façades sought to marry seamlessly with the contemporary expression of the building exterior, and beyond this, the project’s developers sought to infuse the apartments with a pronounced sense of luxury. While an outstanding high-rise building design needs to project personality, the interiors of the one, two and three-bedroom apartments, together with the four luxurious two-storey penthouses, were given the same sophisticated level of treatment.
To achieve the best outcome, the choice of interior paint finishes and coatings was crucial. Ultimately Hickory Group chose Taubmans as their project partner for the development. Rino Colaci, Project Manager at Hickory Group, explained that the “Key to the partnership is not only the quality and performance of Taubmans’ products, but the exceptional service they deliver to their partners. Our relationship with Taubmans goes back many years.”
Speaking further about the apartments, Rino says, “Each Istana apartment has slight variations in colour scheme, with either Jarrah or Tallowwood flooring. They also feature a drop ceiling painted in contrast with the walls and ceilings, so it was important that the interior paint complemented both the light and dark colour schemes.”
Hickory and its chosen commercial painter, UBM Group, invited Taubmans to help articulate the interiors, by discussing colour and recommending a high-tech formula. The product selected, Taubmans Pure Performance™, provides maximum hiding power and superior coverage, while delivering excellent application efficiency. Additionally, Pure Performance™ is scuff resistant in the finished product, and also highly washable.
