Go grey
Grey is the new white.

Grey, grey, grey from charcoal to smokey pale, it's the colour direction that's the hit for 2010. Greys are great to decorate with because so many shades work well with greys. And greys come in so many looks, tinted with blue or green, earthy or steely; all livable.

In complete harmony

An easy rule to remember for an airy, spacious, contemporary look is to paint the wall, ceilings, skirtings, doors, windows and trim in the one colour. This consistency gives a pleasant visual continuity and harmony. The less 'picking out' of detail in contrasting colours, the more modern the look, a contrasting white ceiling would take away from the desired streamlined effect.

Surround yourself

Feature walls are a brilliant invention to add the wow factor to a room. But the next step is to paint all the walls in a deeper colour. A roomful of colour can be very uplifting. Paint the walls, doors and trim in the wall shade. Stick to the one colour through the house for the skirtings, pick a shade that looks good with all the room colours. Choose one colour for all ceilings, too.

Heaven's above

Who said that a ceiling has to be white? It's a decorating habit that can be broken for a bolder look. A ceiling darker than the wall gives an edgy effect because it's such a new and unexpected treatment. Visually the darker ceiling appears to be more enclosing so it's a useful decorating trick for adding a sense of warmth.
