Masking tape is essential for shielding skirting boards, door frames and window frames to avoid paint bleeding over that you'll have to clean later.
Masking tape suits nearly all painting applications. Use low-adhesion tape for smooth, freshly painted or delicate surfaces and multipurpose tape with medium adhesion for rougher surfaces and cured finishes. Shield skirting, power points and light switches using low-tack tape that won't lift existing paint.
Before taping use a cloth to clean down the surfaces and trim. Cover skirting by positioning the tape roll against the wall and pulling it to seal at one corner. Pull it along off the roll about 350mm at a time, careful to press it without stretching. Rotate to tighten and straighten while pressing it to the skirting with a finger, leaving the overhang to catch stray drips. When the paint is dry slowly remove tape, pulling it at 45 degrees to avoid damaging the surface.
