How to Paint a Wall: A Simple Guide for First‑Time Painters

Painting your walls is a quick, affordable way to transform a room. If you’ve never done it before, don’t worry, this guide will walk you through each step. With a little preparation and the right products, you can achieve a flawless finish.

Step 1: Prepare Your Walls

Preparation is everything. Taking time to set up properly will make painting smoother and ensure your paint stands the test of time.

  • Clear the space: Remove picture hooks, switch plates and any fittings from the wall. Protect your floors and furniture with drop cloths.

  • Clean the surface: Wash your walls with a mild detergent solution, rinse thoroughly and let them dry. Treat any mould with a diluted bleach solution.

  • Fix imperfections: Fill cracks, gaps and holes with filler or gap sealant. When dry, sand smooth and wipe away dust.

  • Prime if needed: For the best base coat, apply Taubmans® 3 in 1 Primer Sealer Undercoat. It blocks stains and helps your topcoat adhere better and provide excellent coverage.

Step 2: Choose Your Paint

Picking the right paint makes a big difference to the result.

  • Taubmans Endure® Interior Walls – This premium low‑sheen paint is tough, washable and built with Nanoguard® technology to stand up to everyday wear and tear.

  • Taubmans EasyCoat® Walls – A very low‑VOC paint approved by the National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice® program. It’s ideal for healthier indoor environments.

  • Work out how much paint you need: Use the Taubmans Paint Calculator to avoid buying too much or too little. As a guide, 1L of paint covers roughly 16m².

Step 3: Cut In the Edges

  • Stir your paint so thoroughly for 5 minutes.

  • Load an angled brush lightly and tap off the excess paint.

  • Hold the brush like a pencil and paint along skirting boards, trims and corners. Start inside the corner and brush along the edge.

  • Taubmans tip: Start slightly away from the edge so the bristles can spread out when applying pressure, which helps avoid drips.

Step 4: Roll the Walls

Once the edges are done, it’s time to roll the larger areas.

  • Load the roller evenly: Dip the roller into the paint, then roll it along the tray’s slope to remove excess paint. Repeat until it’s fully coated and has a wet edge.

  • Start a roller’s width away from the edge of the wall. Place the roller at shoulder height and roll up to the ceiling, then down towards the skirting in one motion.

  • Use a “W” or “M” pattern across a section about 1m² at a time. Overlap slightly and finish each section with long, light strokes for a smooth finish.

  • Listen to your roller: If it sounds dry or coverage looks thin, reload it. Keeping the roller properly loaded helps avoid patchy areas.

  • Even out the section: Before reloading, gently run the roller over the wet paint (from ceiling to skirting) without pressure in one direction. This smooths out ridges and lap marks and achieves a consistent look.

Step 5: Apply a Second Coat

  • Let the first coat dry for at least two hours

  • Apply a second coat using the same technique. A second coat deepens the colour and gives you that flawless, professional look.

  • Clean up: When the second coat is dry, carefully remove masking tape and put your furniture back.

Tips for a Better Finish

  • Paint away from natural light sources—start near the window and move away to avoid shadows.

  • Complete one wall at a time to prevent visible lap marks.

  • Use an extension pole or step ladder for high areas to maintain even pressure.
