Improving Urban Living Through Architectural Paint Selection

Location: New Farm, Brisbane, QLD
Our Partner: O'Neill Architecture
Paint Used: Taubmans Windy Beach & Crisp White

Architect Justin O’Neill’s home for a young couple in New Farm epitomises the suburb’s current wave of thoughtfully considered infill housing. The project wasn’t without its challenges, throwing up a number of obstacles – but O’Neill used them to his advantage, designing a uniquely modern family home.

Balancing Light, Privacy, and Climate in Paint Selection

The narrow, 8-metre-wide site, bordered by seven neighbouring properties, presented unique challenges for O’Neill. Privacy, natural light, and ventilation had to be carefully considered while ensuring the home felt spacious and inviting. Additionally, Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate meant that heat management was a key factor in material and colour selection. Rather than seeing these constraints as obstacles, O’Neill embraced them, developing a long, narrow floorplan resembling the city’s romantic laneways with two strategic courtyards to bring in light and air without compromising privacy.

Applying Taubmans Paint to Realise a Modern Aesthetic

To achieve the sophisticated yet timeless aesthetic, O’Neill selected Taubmans Windy Beach for the walls and ceilings, providing a warm, neutral foundation. For the upper level’s exterior, he opted for Taubmans Crisp White, enhancing the home’s modern, minimalist look while contributing to its energy efficiency.

The Role of Colour in Function and Form

Windy Beach was a perfect match for O’Neill’s original design vision, complementing the neutral kitchen joinery, dining room shelving, and polished concrete flooring. The choice of Crisp White for the exterior was both aesthetic and functional—the light colour helps reduce heat absorption, making it ideal for Queensland’s warm climate while also accentuating the architectural sculptural entry port.

A Lasting Impact Through Paint and Design Harmony

Every detail of Laneway House works in harmony, creating a beautifully integrated and highly liveable space. The carefully selected Taubmans colours enhance both the interior and exterior, ensuring the home’s coolness, durability, and timelessness. The high-performance coatings provide long-lasting protection, making the home well-equipped to handle Brisbane’s climate while maintaining its striking architectural appeal. By turning challenges into opportunities, O’Neill successfully delivered a sophisticated, contemporary home designed for modern family living.
