Located in Darlinghurst, Sydney, The Horizon is a 45-storey residential tower constructed in 1998. An award-winning design by architect Harry Seidler, the building contains 250 apartments and offers picturesque views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. The exterior recently underwent a major repaint using premium PPG Taubmans products, including Armawall Primer, Armawall Satin, All Weather, and other specialty architectural coatings.
At the 2024 NSW Master Painters Awards, SAP Group Australia won the following awards;

This project involved repainting and remediating the building’s exterior to deliver a coating system that ensures extensive longevity and durability.
The architecturally complex 45-storey building required a strategic approach by the applicator, skilfully combining abseil and swing stage platforms to access all areas safely.
Minimising disruption to owners and tenants while maintaining strict safety standards was a critical challenge for both building management and the applicator.
Additionally, the engineer needed to specify a product system that guaranteed both aesthetic appeal and long-term performance, supported by a comprehensive warranty to facilitate future maintenance planning and provide peace of mind.
Taubmans worked with the various stakeholders and developed a comprehensive Taubmans Coating Specification. This solution included a combination of Taubmans high quality exterior premium products, including the Armawall Membrane and Texture Coating system to enhance durability, provide high weather resistance and dirt shedding properties. The Taubmans Specification Services team were also able to offer a comprehensive extended warranty based on the combination of products and ongoing maintenance schedule, supported by the professional application and project management of both the contractor and Engineer to specification requirements.
Key benefits:
• Water based acrylic primer/sealer specially modified to maximise adhesion and penetration as a primer, and alkali resistance as a sealer.
• Designed to even out the absorption rate in the substrate and allows more time for the application process as it seals the surface, making the application of the texture or membrane more easily controlled.
Key features of PPG’s acrylic membrane and texture systems are the elongation and crack bridging ability, high resistance to fungal and algal growth, high UV resistance and good water vapour permeability while resisting water ingress.
Armawall Satin is also approved to APAS 0117/2 for long life masonry coatings.

The comprehensive repaint and remediation enhanced The Horizons’ exterior with a protected and highly durable finish. The project delivered on its core objective, ensuring long-term performance on a complex façade, while minimising disruption to residents throughout the process.
The successful execution was recognised with multiple industry awards, acknowledging excellence in project management, customer service and technical application. With a fully specified coating system and an extended maintenance pathway in place, the building is now positioned for lasting durability and reliable performance against Sydney’s environmental conditions.
