How to Paint Your Exterior Facade (Render, Brick & Weatherboard)

Australia’s harsh sun, heat and changing weather can take a serious toll on your home’s exterior, causing paint to fade, crack and peel faster than expected. Whether your façade is rendered, brick or weatherboard, painting the outside of your home is one of the best ways to protect it and instantly refresh its look.

With the right preparation, quality tools and trusted Taubmans exterior paints, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that stands up to Australian conditions. Follow our step-by-step guide below to confidently paint your exterior façade and enjoy long-lasting results.

Painting Render? Watch this Step-by-Step Guide

With many modern homes now built with rendered exteriors, it’s common for surfaces to develop fine cracks and wear over time. This video shows you how to properly prepare, repair and paint rendered walls to achieve a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Step 1: Prepare the Walls

  • Wash down the walls with a bucket of soapy water to remove dirt and grime, then rinse with clean water and allow to dry. Use a pressure washer for tough or grimy areas.

  • Treat any mould with a diluted bleach solution, rinse thoroughly and let dry completely.

  • Scrape away flaking paint and sand back rough or glossy sections.

  • Fill dents, holes or cracks with exterior-grade filler or gap sealant.

Step 2: Protect Surrounding Areas

Before painting, take a few minutes to protect what you don’t want painted.

  • Temporarily move pot plants, hoses and outdoor furniture away from the walls.

  • Apply painter’s tape around trims, windows, doors and fittings.

  • Use drop cloths to cover paths, decks or any surfaces close to the house.

Step 3: Choose the Right Paint & Tools

For exterior walls, we recommend:

  • Taubmans All Weather® Exterior: Self-priming, UV resistant, mould and mildew resistant, and built to resist blistering, peeling and dirt.

  • Taubmans Sunproof® Exterior: Fast-drying, self-priming and protects against cracking.

You’ll also need:

  • 230mm or 270mm roller frame with 9–12mm nap roller cover. For render, consider using a thicker nap.

  • Paint tray and roller pole.

  • Spray gun (if applicable).

  • Paint brush for edges and detail areas.

Step 4: Start Painting

  • Always paint from the top down. Begin with gutters, then fascias and eaves.

  • For gutters and fascias, use a brush rather than a roller for accuracy.

  • Next, move on to the walls:

    • Weatherboards: Use a small roller, brush or spray gun.

    • Brick or render: Use a spray or an extra-long roller with a thick nap.

  • Work in sections, keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

  • Paint trims and window frames last, keeping windows open while painting so they don’t stick shut.

  • Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the tape.

Final Word

Painting your home’s exterior is a big job, but with the right preparation and Taubmans exterior paints, you’ll get a finish that looks great and lasts. Take your time with the prep, work top to bottom, and enjoy the transformation of your home’s façade.
